# Backup & Recovery

Because Lacuna is non-custodial, your recovery phrase is the only way to restore your wallet — so treat it carefully.

## Your Recovery Phrase

When you create your wallet, you're shown a recovery phrase. Write it down and store it offline (never as a screenshot or in cloud notes). Anyone with this phrase can restore your wallet.

## Restoring On A New Device

Install the app, choose **Restore Wallet**, and enter your recovery phrase. Your keys — and access to your shielded notes — are regenerated locally on the new device.

## What Lacuna Cannot Do

Lacuna has no copy of your phrase or keys and cannot reset them for you. This is the trade-off of true self-custody: total control, total responsibility.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://whitepaper.lacunalabs.io/the-lacuna-wallet/backup-recovery.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
